ABOUT US

Victoria, owner of Readymoney Beach Shop

From defunct public toilets to quirky shop...

In 2016 Cornwall Council closed the public toilets at Readymoney Cove in Fowey, along with many other toilet facilities across Cornwall. As Fowey's main beach, Readymoney is popular with locals and visitors alike, as well as attracting passing walkers on both the South West Coastal Path and The Saints Way (which runs between Padstow and Fowey).

I live in Fowey with my husband Andrew, our three boys, two dogs, two cats and varying numbers of chickens! Having decided to 'retire' from my 15 year career as a personal injury solicitor, we relocated from Cambridge to Fowey in 2015 after falling in love with Fowey over the previous decade, we even spent our honeymoon here in 2007!

Like many local families, we spend a lot of time at Readymoney and a lack of toilet facilities would have been a disaster. So, following a series of interconnecting events involving the town Christmas lights, a camping stove on a wallpapering table and a closed council toilet block, my journey into the world of retail started in March 2017. With some help from an interior designer friend plus an adaptable and hardworking local builder and his team, we converted the old ladies' toilets into the shop and opened in May 2017 selling all the basics for a day at the beach as well as keeping the public toilets open for all to use, all year round, free of charge.

The business quickly grew, yikes! As well as keeping beach goers and passing walkers refreshed with locally roasted Cornish and delicious Cornish ice-cream from two brilliant small family run brands, we now sell a wide range of gift items and homewares. We specialise in locally made products from predominantly Cornwall based artists, makers and crafters. Have a browse and see if anything catches your eye today.

Although the shop itself is tiny, selling online means I can provide a much wider range and I'm passionate about supporting small independent businesses and encouraging people to shop small and shop local. Many of my customers are fiercely passionate about Readymoney with strong and emotive memories and it is an honour to be able to curate a thoughtful collection of products to keep those people connected to Readymoney, to Fowey and to Cornwall, wherever in the world in the world they may be.

Running as sustainable a business as possible is also really important to me and if you order online, it's quite likely that your order will arrive in reused packaging. I never throw packaging away as I believe that re-using is always more important than recycling and I'm a firm believer that it's what inside that counts! Why not check out my blog post on running a sustainable small business.

The shop is open all year round (click here for current opening hours) with at least one public toilet open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Come and see us and say hello!
