A winter morning view over Readymoney Cove

Things to Do in Fowey During Autumn & Winter

Victoria Clark

Hello, everyone! I'm Victoria, the proud owner of Readymoney Beach Shop, and I'd love to share with you the best ways to embrace the magic of autumn and winter in the charming town of Fowey. As the seasons change, Fowey reveals its unique charm, and there are plenty of wonderful things to do in our beautiful town during this time of year. Let me take you through my personal favourite things to do in Fowey during autumn and winter.

Wander through Fowey's stunning streets

Autumn and winter bring a sense of cosiness to Fowey's streets. With fewer crowds, you can leisurely explore our town's picturesque winding streets and admire the shop windows with their seasonal displays. I especially love looking at all the different colourful front doors on the way through the town, with a huge variety of interesting door knockers. Definitely take a moment to pop into the local shops and cafes, most like ours at Readymoney Beach Shop are open all year round and offer a great selection of gifts and tasty treats. Can you spot Bea the resident cat in the window of the bookshop?

Take in the breathtaking views

The changing seasons offer a new perspective on Fowey's natural beauty. Strolling along the Esplanade towards Readymoney Cove is one of the most pleasureable things to do in Fowey during autumn and winter. It's a fairly flat 10 minute walk from the town centre with views to die for. Between 1st November and Easter Sunday each year you can park for free at Readymoney carpark on Tower Park.

Whichever route you choose, the crisp sea air, rolling waves, and the (persistent!) sound of seagulls create that unique Cornish atmosphere which makes Fowey just so special. This time of year is perfect for appreciating nature's wonders and I think the stunning coastal views across to Polruan and into St Austell Bay are perfectly framed by the golden leaves on the trees.

Savour seasonal delights

Fowey has no shortage of great places to eat and the autumn and winter months bring their own special flavours. Visit the beach shop (we're open all year round apart from Christmas Day) for seasonal delights such as pumpkin spiced lattes and and our popular winter warmers hot chocolate menu. Our basket of snuggly free to borrow blankets in the beach shelter make it the perfect place to warm up with a hot drink and piece of locally baked cake to indulge in the local taste of Fowey with what I think is the best view in the world.

Popular Fowey restaurant Appleton's has recently launched a Sunday roast and I'm reliably informed its an excellent spread so do give it a try.

Embrace the history

Fowey is a town steeped in history, and the autumn and winter seasons provide an ideal backdrop for exploring its past. Follow in the footsteps of Daphne du Maurier and take a walk from Readymoney Cove up to St Catherine's Castle or enjoy the quiet peacefulness inside St Fimbarrus Church. You could even hunt down Fowey's windmill if you know where to look.

There are often talks arranged by the local historical society which provide a special insight into our much loved town, keep an eye out for events advertised on social media.

Join in the festivities

There are always plenty of things to do in Fowey in autumn and winter with events, festivals, and community gatherings. The big winter highlight is the popular Christmas Market weekend but there are also smaller events going on all year round at the local community centre, live music in the pubs, particularly The Ship and The Galleon and themed events at our two sailing clubs including Gallants' famed fancy dress New Years' shindig. If you're a fan of a pub quiz then The Safe Harbour's popular Tuesday night quiz raises funds for a different local cause each week.

In conclusion, even though snow is a rarity, Fowey definitely comes into its own during the colder seasons, and Readymoney Cove is a gateway to experiencing the town's unique beauty and charm. If you're looking for the best things to do in Fowey during autumn and winter, follow my personal recommendations, and you'll fall in love with this picturesque coastal town all over again. Enjoy your time in Fowey, and be sure to visit us at Readymoney Beach Shop for a warm welcome and some delightful seasonal treats!

The information you given has been so helpful in my decision to visit Fowey at the end of January for a week. I certainly will come to your shop for a coffee and cake.
