Five New Things to Do in Fowey This Summer

Victoria Clark

Hello and welcome! I'm Victoria, I run Readymoney Beach Shop here in beautiful Fowey on the South Cornish coast. Whether you are visiting Fowey on holiday, from further afield in Cornwall or live locally, it's always useful to have a few insider tips on how to keep entertained in Fowey over the long summer holidays. So here is my list of five new things to do in Fowey this summer.

1. Paddle in Whitehouse Pool

Now, strictly this isn't a new thing as the children's paddling pool at Whitehouse was built in the 1920's to provide a safe water play area. Many local residents and long time visitors have fond memories of playing in the pool as children and it was sad to see the pool fall into disrepair over the last decade. You can read more about the history of Whitehouse pool in this Facebook article.

However, after ownership of the Whitehouse area was transferred to the Fowey Harbour Commissioners from Cornwall Council combined with a hugely successful local fundraising campaign, the pool was finally restored and reopened to the public in late 2024. There is a new kiosk serving a variety of refreshments together with a public toilet.

Caveat: although the Whitehouse pool is accurately described as a tidal pool, at it's deepest point only comes up to around calf/knee height on an adult so it's definitely more for paddling than for swimming. There is a designated swim area at Whitehouse beach next to the pool and of course, there is always the very popular swim platform slightly further along the road at Readymoney where my beach shop is.

Fish and chips by the sea in Fowey

2. Fish & chips at Webbsters

Over the years fish & chip shops have come and gone in Fowey but I'm delighted that we now have Webbsters. Run by the team who manage The King of Prussia pub, Webbsters opened a short while ago and I can personally recommend their especially excellent mushy peas, restaurant quality for sure.

It's takeaway only and most people head round the corner to Town Quay to sit on the benches and enjoy the view. Be warned though, those pesky seagulls will have your chips if you don't stay vigilant!

The Old Bank, Fowey

3. Paint & Sip at The Old Bank

Another stunning renovation of a Fowey institution has recently resulted in this beautiful new creative space right in the centre of town. As the name suggests, the building used to be Lloyds Bank and was most recently a mechanical art & design museum.

The Old Bank has been carefully and beautifully brought back to glory by the new owners and acts as an art gallery, coffee shop, wine bar and event space. There's a table of paints for visitors to create their own mini masterpieces and this is definitely one to watch in terms of forthcoming events and workshops.

Scooter fun at Fowey pump track

4. Pump track at Squires Field

The town play area up at Squire's Field on Park Road has undergone quite the facelift recently following the hard work of two of Fowey's town councillors in obtaining funding, consulting the community and managing the new project. There is now a very popular pump track for use with bikes and scooters and a multi use games area is due to open very soon.

Squires Field itself has been improved by the addition of a new pathway all around the field and a number of benches for seating, all sponsored by local people & business owners. The play equipment in the playground has also been renewed and replaced. You'll find Squire's Field uphill from the town centre.

Scavenger hunt at Readymoney Cove, Fowey

5. Readymoney Cove Scavenger Hunt

Our new scavenger hunt at Readymoney Cove is a popular activity, whatever the weather. There are QR codes on posters to scan at the beach or you can click this link to receive a downloadable copy of the scavenger hunt sheet. Find as many of the 20 items as you can (or charge the kids with finding all 20 if you really need to keep them occupied!) and count up the points.

There are no prizes, other than personal glory of course, but we do keep a league table of scores in the shop. With the ever changing nature of Readymoney Cove, why not repeat the hunt on a different and see whether you can beat your previous score? Or set the kids on a mission to see which of them can win the most points.
